Gum Disease Treatment in Alpharetta & Norcross, GA
Gum disease is one of the most common oral health conditions affecting adults and is a leading cause of tooth loss. At Ace Family Dental, we offer comprehensive periodontal treatment options designed to help manage gum disease, improve oral health, protect dental implants, and preserve your natural smile.
What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums and supporting structures around the teeth. Many patients do not realize they have gum disease because symptoms often develop gradually. Without treatment, gum disease can lead to bleeding gums, gum recession, bone loss, loose teeth, tooth loss, chronic bad breath, oral infections, and implant complications.
Signs & Symptoms of Gum Disease
You may have gum disease if you experience:
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing
- Swollen, red, or tender gums
- Chronic bad breath
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
- Gum sensitivity
- Changes in bite

Scaling & Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Scaling and Root Planing (SRP), commonly referred to as a deep cleaning, is a non-surgical periodontal treatment used to manage gum disease. Unlike a routine dental cleaning, SRP removes harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar from deep below the gumline where infection develops. The goal is to reduce inflammation, stop the progression of periodontal disease, and help gums heal around the teeth.
The Two-Step Process
Scaling: Using specialized hand instruments and ultrasonic technology, plaque, tartar, and bacteria are removed from above and below the gumline.
Root Planing: The root surfaces are carefully smoothed to remove rough areas where bacteria collect and to encourage healthier gum attachment.
Local anesthesia is typically used for comfort. Treatment is often completed over multiple visits. Mild soreness and sensitivity may occur afterward, and healing instructions will be provided.
Periodontal Maintenance
Periodontal maintenance is an ongoing specialized cleaning therapy for patients previously treated for gum disease. Unlike routine cleanings, periodontal maintenance is designed to control a chronic condition and prevent disease recurrence. Harmful bacteria can repopulate and reach destructive levels within 90–120 days, which is why most periodontal patients require maintenance every three to four months.
During a periodontal maintenance visit, our team performs periodontal charting, subgingival scaling, root surface debridement, and may use irrigation therapy with antimicrobial solutions to reduce bacteria within deeper pockets.
Perio Protect
Perio Protect is an FDA-cleared, non-surgical treatment that uses custom-made trays to deliver medication deep below the gumline. Traditional brushing and flossing often cannot reach deep periodontal pockets where harmful bacteria live. Perio Protect uses a patented internal seal that helps hold medication in place long enough to disrupt bacterial colonies and support healing.
Benefits include non-surgical treatment, FDA-cleared technology, targets bacteria below the gumline, supports healthier gums, helps manage bleeding, may help reduce pocket depth, freshens breath, and may provide whitening benefits.
Patients typically brush and floss before use, apply prescribed medication to trays, wear trays as directed (typically 10–15 minutes), and rinse trays after use. Perio Protect is often recommended alongside periodontal maintenance and deep cleaning therapy.
P3 Periodontal Therapy
P3 is a proprietary, locally applied doxycycline-based antibiotic treatment used to help manage periodontal disease and peri-implantitis. Unlike oral antibiotics, P3 is delivered directly into the treatment area where infection is present, avoiding many gastrointestinal side effects associated with oral antibiotics.
P3 Maintenance may be used during deep cleanings, periodontal maintenance visits, implant maintenance therapy, and ongoing periodontal treatment.
P3 Surgical Therapy may also be used following tooth extractions, implant placement, bone grafting, and surgical procedures to help support healing and reduce harmful bacterial activity.
Why Gum Health Matters
Healthy gums support healthy teeth. Research has shown periodontal disease may be associated with heart disease, diabetes, pregnancy complications, and chronic inflammation. Maintaining healthy gums is an important part of overall wellness.
