Why an Oral Biopsy May Be Needed

During your regular dental exam, your dentist carefully examines your mouth for any unusual changes. If a suspicious lesion, sore, lump, or discoloration is found that does not resolve on its own within two weeks, an oral biopsy may be recommended to determine the cause.

Oral biopsies are critical for the early detection of oral cancer and other conditions. When caught early, many oral health conditions are highly treatable.

The Oral Biopsy Procedure

The biopsy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure performed right in our office. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, and a small tissue sample is taken from the lesion. The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. Results are typically available within 1 to 2 weeks, and our team will contact you to discuss the findings and any recommended treatment.
