Why Bone Grafting Is Needed
When a tooth is lost or extracted, the jawbone in that area begins to resorb — losing both density and volume over time. This bone loss can make it difficult or impossible to place dental implants without first rebuilding the bone. Periodontal disease, trauma, and long-term denture use can also lead to significant jawbone deterioration.
Bone grafting addresses this by adding bone material to the deficient area, stimulating new bone growth and restoring the volume needed for successful implant placement.
The Bone Grafting Procedure
During the procedure, bone graft material is placed in the area of bone loss. This material serves as a scaffold for your body to generate new, natural bone. The graft is then covered and given time to heal and integrate — typically 3 to 6 months. Once the grafted area has fully healed and new bone has formed, you will be ready for dental implant placement.
