Mouthwash Basics 101

Man pouring mouthwash

When looking for the perfect mouthwash, it is always important to remember that the products you use for your teeth should mimic the features you desire in your smile. If you are using toothpaste and mouthwash products that focus on whitening teeth, but you suffer from dental erosion and cavities, you won’t be doing yourself any favors. Focus on what you smile needs, and expand on it.

With mouthwash, it is always important to speak with your dentist before using any product. Mouthwash comes in many different shapes and forms and can range from fluoride treatments to simple breath fresheners. To ensure the safety and effectiveness of your mouthwash, try to stick to those brands that feature the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

Never use mouthwash in place of brushing and flossing, as mouthwash is intended as a supplemental cleaning tool only. Although some forms of mouthwash can wash away plaque buildup and harmful acids, it cannot do a complete job like brushing and flossing daily will do. However, if you suffer from halitosis, mouthwash should be one of your first treatment methods to try.
